A simple packing list for a day out with your dog

A little preparation makes it easier to gather the familiar things you and your dog use when heading out together.

A day out often starts with the same small question: have we remembered everything? Keeping a reusable packing list can make the preparation easier. Adapt it to your dog, your destination and the length of the outing.

Start with the destination

Check the venue or accommodation’s own information about dogs before you set off. Note where you plan to stop, what facilities are available and anything you need to bring yourself.

Pack the everyday basics

Gather your usual lead, waste bags, a bowl and drinking water. If the outing includes a normal mealtime, pack your dog’s usual food and what you need to serve it. Choose the things already familiar to your routine.

Leave room for the messy moments

A towel and a separate bag for muddy or wet items can be useful after a walk. If you bring a familiar blanket or mat, think about where it will go and how you will carry it home.

Keep useful information together

Save the destination details and relevant contact numbers somewhere you can find them quickly. Keep any booking confirmation and the information you need for the day with the rest of your plans.

Make the next outing easier

When you get home, replace anything you used up and note what you wished you had packed. A small, personal checklist becomes more useful each time you use it.

This is a general packing guide, rather than a complete plan for every dog or journey. For international travel, use the current official guidance for your route and destination.
